INTERNATIONAL LICENSE




Rule 2(i) of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 defines international license as a  “ driving permit issued by a Licensing Authority in India under Chapter II of Motor Vehicle Act to an Indian National authorizing the person specified therein to drive any categories of motor vehicles as specified in form 6 A in the areas or territories of countries other than India but excluding the countries with whom there are no diplomatic relations”.
fApplication for International Driving Permit can be entertained by the licensing authorities only. Additional licensing Authorities or Assistant Licensing Authorities have no power to grant International Driving permit. So application for international driving permit has to be filed before the Regional Transport Officer who is the Licensing Authority of a region. The application shall be filed in form 4 A before the RTO within whose jurisdiction the applicant resides. The fee of issue of INDP is Rs 200.00 plus Rs 500.00.
Applicant has to produce the following documents along with the application for international permit.
1.       Valid driving license
2.       Three passport size photographs
3.       Certified copy of the passport
4.       Certified copy of Visa
5.       Document to prove the citizenship
6.       Medical certificate in form A
7.       Receipt of prescribed fee and service charge.
The applicant shall appear in person before the RTO on the date fixed by the RTO, After necessary verification and test, international driving permit will be issued. The validity of International Driving Permit shall be one year.

    I had applied for an idp with the documents as instructed above in calicut rto. Unfortunately i was rejected on saying that my address in the license and passport (permanent address) does not belong under the jurisdiction of the calicut rto and had to apply for it in the rto where my permanent address belongs(thalassery rto). They told me to first change my license to that rto and then only i can apply for an idp there. As my itinerary is due and have to travel in 2 days, i would not be able to go through these procedure. Is there any other way i can my idp??

  2. Your address in the license and passport should be one and the same. As it is easier to note change of address in the license, if you want to take an international license, the address in the license has to be changed to the address in the passport. I think you can do these things during your next visit

    If your purpose is genuine, you can contact your local RTO and explain the situation. He will examine your case and he has the power to issue international license to such applicants if he finds the request is genuine.

  7. Should the driving licence be over 1 year or it must be valid for minimum 1 year. Can you please clarify.i just got my licence and I have to leave in one week, can I get the international driving permit.

  10. You can apply on IMTA nternational driving licence India from anywhere in the world. Apply for Soft Copy if you need an IDP Immediately.
